The power of paint: our brick fireplace gets an update!

home sweet home, project diy, Styling

Paint is a very cost effective way to transform a room! In this case, it was free ninety nine! Everything was on hand and things I used from past projects. But even if we had to pay for everything we used, it still would have been super affordable and worth every penny!

I shared how our fireplace went from drab to fab!! Ha, so corny but true! Anyway I shared how we painted our fireplace white a couple days ago on my IG stories. To my surprise, so many people asked me to share what I used for this project and if I could give more details so let’s do it!

Affiliate links are included, but as always, all opinions are my own!

what we did to our fireplace

The first thing we did was lightly sand using 220 grit to roughen up the brass and door handles on the fireplace door inserts.

Then we taped everything off to spray paint just the brass parts and door handles with this high heat black spray paint

We used this same paint on the inside of the fireplace in our last house and it worked great. So of course we used this same spray paint to spray the inside of this fireplace after cleaning it with this heavy duty all-purpose cleaner that requires no rinsing.

I also lightly sanded the mantel with the same 220 grit sand paper before priming.

You can see how the original brick had some very deep red tones sprinkled (above left). So while the mantel only needed 2 coats, this fireplace definitely needed 3 coats of our go to primer

Like I said in the beginning of this post, everything we had was on hand! So the paint we went with for the white, is.. wait for it.. this flat white ceiling paint which we always use to paint our ceilings. It’s a true white so I knew it would work just fine for our fireplace!

Now I know you might be wondering.. won’t that be hard to keep clean since it’s flat? Yeah, you’re totally right. Flat paint isn’t ideal for surfaces that gets used often which is why I used this protective finish that we used on our breakfast table here and here when we painted it with chalk paint. It worked great on that table, so I trust it will do great here!

Not bad right! And speaking of what I used, I really believe you don’t have to use a fancy brush when painting bricks! In fact, I would say avoid it and stick to cheap brushes! With all the nooks and crannies and rough textures you’re going to be painting, your brush will get pretty banged up.

a little quick styling

Loved that my cute large and medium glass vases could fit here! I’ve always wanted a mantel to style free of a tv up on top so you know I’m really enjoying this! I have nothing against having a tv above our fireplace, but this is a nice change!

Adding this wood planter and wood bowl to the mantel really helps add warmth to this fireplace. I also added this cute wood stool on the foot of the fireplace to add balance.

I’m a big fan of my juju hats! This is the same large one as the one currently hanging in my master bedroom reveal from last week

Also, greenery always always is my go to; it makes every space feel welcoming and fresh!

This wall isn’t quite done yet! We are planning on switching out those old orangey wood blinds for some bamboo roman shades similar to the ones we used in our kitchen at the last house here

We also are currently debating on making our own shelf inserts to add to that drywall inset to the left of the fireplace. Maybe removing that middle separation so it will look like one tall inset with 4 shelves, but still debating. And at the bottom shelf, we would use to store wood for the fireplace. Wouldn’t that be so cute and functional?!

The flooring will also be changed throughout our home so that will also make all the difference. But learning to just enjoy the process.. One project at a time I keep telling myself!

Thanks for stopping by! Hope you got some ideas for your fireplace wall today! I look forward to sharing more of our new home and new projects we’re working on! If you’re new around here, make sure to sign up at the bottom of this post to stay connected and updated on what’s new! Have a great rest of your week!
