There are some challenges that come with a small powder bathroom, but I think they can also be made manageable, and in the process let’s also switch things up for fall!
On top of being tiny, this bathroom also has no windows, so taking these pictures of this little space is never easy, but I figured I would mix it up with some natural shots when it worked and some with the lights on when the natural light wasn’t cutting it.
Here are some ways I made this space feel bigger and work harder
- I used shiplap paneling and went vertical which is just a pretty feature but also can help a space feel taller. You can go the traditional horizontal direction, which can help a space appear wider.
- Painting the ceiling the same color as the wall also helps the space feel larger because there’s no abrupt break between the wall and ceiling. Make sure to use ceiling paint, with the same color as the walls.
- Having less stuff on the ground also gives the feeling of a larger space. I chose to do a floating vanity which makes the tiny bathroom feel a bit larger seeing more flooring.
- The number one tip to make a space with limited square footage work harder, is by using the walls. This powder bathroom’s side kick is wall hooks. Since I don’t even have the space for a wall cabinet nor do I have much counter space, wall hooks work wonders in here. I used a wall hanging basket to hold feminine products, and another basket in the case that a guest needs a spot to drop their phone. I have a hook on the door and a hook rack on the wall behind the door for any other needs- jacket, purse, hats, etc.
- Another way to make a small space work harder for you is figuring out how you can maximize the space without using square footage. The wall hooks definitely fall in that category. In this bathroom’s case, I have a floating vanity which helps the space feel bigger, but it also gives me the opportunity to store some toilet paper below. I just used a market basket to keep it together. Another way is to get creative with counter space. To add a little more space on our vanity, we DIYed the floating vanity to allow the counter to run across the whole wall, even with the odd angle we have here. It allowed a little space to add some styling and hold the hand soap. Naturally, I also added a shelf above the toilet which holds extra hand towels as well as allows for another styling moment.
Are you frustrated with any small spaces in your home or finding it challenging to work with it? If so, hope you got some ideas today for your small spaces. I think if we get creative and rework things to help a space function better for us, we can start to enjoy even the small spaces and dare I say even love having it!

October 3, 2020Amazing! We have what is possibly the tiniest half bath ever. Love the corner sink idea. Someday when we get around to renovating that area, I may steal some ideas! Our half bath has a pocket door which is a wonderful space-saving feature.

December 10, 2021Wow. I like this article and its tips. I think that neutral colors can save us from visual noise in the bath, as well as light tones make a space visually bigger. I also recommend organizing the bathroom wisely. I use lots of organizers, adjustable dividers and like to use a bath caddy tray for chilling.
