Our Kitchen Renovation Plans and some Progress

home sweet home, room tour

Hey friends, today I wanted to share about our kitchen renovation that has been going on for a few months now which we were hoping would be done by now. But we had a few bumps in the road that slowed down the progress but we are finally almost there.

For today I wanted to share the kitchen mood board, a little update of what’s happened in here and what’s left to do. You can shop our mood board at the bottom of this post.

Here’s the mood board:

Our kitchen has undergone a complete renovation from head to toe! Here’s a look at the before:

Here’s a progress shot of the same view:

Some of the big changes in here was removing the sliding door to extend the kitchen out a bit which allowed us to add a peninsula, moving the window over and making it a little bit larger, adding a new pipe for our pot filler and moving our sink over to sit centered to the new window.

Outside of that, we removed the oversized light box that made the kitchen feel even smaller than it already was and giving the whole kitchen new cabinets. We  used the Sektion system from Ikea in our last house, but this time we chose these Ikea cabinet doors called Axstad in a matte white, which is actually a new line. You’re going to think I’m crazy but I didn’t even see these in person when I ordered them. They were so new, they weren’t even in store yet but I saw a few images on their website and was convinced I would love them. Sure enough they came, and I couldn’t be happier with them! If you want more info about them, I’ll be doing a post on my thoughts on the Ikea Sektion cabinets and doors.

We also went with all stainless steel appliances. We bought our fridge just a few months before we sold our last house, and we really didn’t want to buy a new one so we decided to bring it on over to this home. I like the simple handles and design so I got  matching dishwasher. Plus it was in our budget so that was great.

I did consider also buying the matching stove, but I really wanted to go bigger and better and heard amazing things about the professional grade Z Line appliances so decided to give the 36″ range a try. Don’t let the good looks fool you, this gorgeous range has a lot of power and is a lot easier to clean than the past 2 stoves we’ve owned!

We also went with this insert range hood which is 34″x18″ and wow was I impressed at how great it is. These are both professional grade and it shows! The fan on the hood is amazing and the stove and oven has been nothing but great!

Then there’s our beautiful Elkay fireclay farm sink. I chose it in white and I love that it comes with a cutting board that sits perfectly on top of the sink. I also chose this Elkay 3 hole faucet pulldown in lustrous steel (and had to get the matching pot filler), honestly cause it was pretty but now that we’ve had it for a couple months, what I love most is the pull down feature and how you can angle it to shoot water out at an angle making it so much easier for the kids to wash their hands and not splash everywhere.

As for the lighting we chose, you can see here we went with these classic yet fun white metal dome shaped pendants from Mitzi by Hudson Valley Lighting. I love that these are very versatile and has a simple, modern, and can easily lean toward the farmhouse or eclectic design, and really can fit in with a lot of different styles! I love light fixtures that can do that!

Here are the lights we are using in our kitchen. The one on the right is the lights we got for over the cabinets and in the cabinets with glass doors. It’s mainly for ambiance and it was really affordable and does the job!

We are currently using stools from our last kitchen. And while I love them, I ultimately want to have stools with back support. Here are some with a coastal feel that I’m eyeing and still going back and forth on.

If you’re looking for backless stools, here are a few I love:

So what’s next?

I shared this progress shot from yesterday’s IG post. You can see here the counters have been installed, wall has since been painted, some details have been added to the peninsula, and our backsplash is up.

The counters are quartz from a local granite store and they’re called Snow Mountain.

The walls were painted Polar Bear by Behr. I love this wall color, especially in sun filled spaces.

We still have some details to add to the back of the peninsula and on to painting it. The paint was color matched to the cabinet doors.

The tiles we picked are called Provincetown 2.5″ x 9″ in Porch White from Bedrosians Tile and Stone. I love the classic look and chose a tile that was a little longer than your classic subway tile. The tiles are glazed ceramic with a little texture on them giving them some depth and dimension when the sunlight hits it.

I can’t wait to share the space all finished up! It will take a bit more time but I’m just so overwhelmed with gratitude at the work we’ve been able to do so far. God providing for all our needs and giving us good health and energy through the long nights working, He’s a generous and loving God who cares for us.  Jason being patient with me and my crazy ideas, and working so so hard to get this thing done (he’s a beast! but you guys know this already). And thanks to all of you for being here, allowing me to share this love for making a house a home with you guys. And even seeing you guys doing the same, I love that! Please keep sharing! Gosh you wouldn’t think a house project would get me all emotional and yet here I am.

HA, ok enough of that, thanks guys! You got a question, a thought, please let me know, I have an answer for you! If not, I’ll find it!

Love your style! Just curious what countertops you went with that coordinates so well with everything? Thank you!

Hey Stacy! The counters are quartz and called Snow Mountain. Idk what the brand is, they were slabs the store just carried. Hope that helps!

Hi there, did you have any difficulty in getting the paint matched to the Axtad door? I have purchased an Axtad kitchen and looking to get paint. The machine at the paint store was unable to match a paint that was pure white. It was not even able to read the sample. Any suggestions? Did you just take it to a local hardware to match paint? Thanks

It really was difficult. I had them color match it at Home Depot but it turned out a little cooler than the actual white on the cabinets but it’s not too bad. They did try again and gave us new paint but we have yet to try it out and see if it’s better.

Your kitchen is looking beautiful! What a transformation. I am having the same trouble as Heather! Color matching the Axstad has proven to be a bit tricky. We have yet to find a match in both color and finish. Sherwin Williams explained the match required an ultra white base but the finish in that base did not come in “satin” and would be semi-gloss. I’m curious to know if you arrived at a good match! Thank you!

Hi there. I did find a good paint match with the finish i was looking for at Home Depot. The color is called “Ultra Pure White” in matte finish by Behr. Your finished kitchen pics are beautiful!

          Best of luck!

            Thank you, Heather!! 😄

Yes – the Axstad paint match issue 🙂 Sherwin told me it was High Reflective White with a micro drop of Raw Umber. Was looking at BM’s Chantilly Lace, Super white, and IDK what else. I don’t care for Behr paint but I’ll head over there and look. I ‘think’ I have Ultra Pure White here but it’s leaning a tad to yellow undertones so I might’ve tweaked it.

Any other epiphanies on this folks?

Any luck on the Axtad white paint match? I have several custom panels and a range hood that will need to be painted.

            Sadie,

Were you able to confirm that the behr paint matched?

HI Laura, so sorry I missed your message! The Pergo flooring in our home was recently discontinued and I’ve been searching for one that is comparable to these because they really are pretty! If I do find one that comes close, I will be sure to share here on the blog!

Your kitchen is beautiful! we’re doing a kitchen Reno using the axstad cabinets and haven’t decided on a farmhouse sink yet because I haven’t found out how to make it work with the cabinets. Did you end up using a the sink base and getting 20in High doors? And then cut fillers to hide the exposed gaps? Thanks so much!

Hi Brittany, thanks so much! We did do the 20″ doors and added fillers for the gap!

Thank you. Trying to figure it out is giving me a headache Lol. So how did you get your sink to sit flush with the top of the cabinets? You have a 20” door plus filler above the door, and 10” sink. That would be over 30” ? Sorry for the questions we’re ordering cabinets tomorrow and I’m trying to figure out our best route!
        Thanks much!

Did you use unlacquered brass or aged brass Rejuvenation pulls? I’m having a hard time telling the difference in the two! Thank you!

Wow! Those are indeed amazing requests from the historic board. But, yeah, I assume it’s like that sometime. I do know you have been struggling the great fight, and albeit it’s weird as hell, if you’re content with the compromises and are able to move forward, I’m here for it. Sending you all the great things.

    Great kitchen!
Curious – did you colour match the cover panels/gables? The matte white for the cover panels are not the same white as the matte white cabinet doors. Thanks

Hi there I came across your kitchen when I did a google search for the best white to paint walls when using white Axstad cabinets.
My husband and I are in day 8 of the process. Oh boy a kitchen Reno is not for the faint of heart. So far we have the demo done, all of the boxes are awaiting on the adjacent room. My husband is changing up some electrical and doing drywall repairs. We ordered SS appliances – some here – some were waiting for, flooring is ordered and we found someone to help my husband install it. Countertops are ordered – Quartz – and they come to measure the first week in November. So by Nov. 1 we have a have the majority of the cabinets up and TG e kitchen painted. Holes are drilled for recessed lights but they aren’t in yet. We also have a single bowl SS sink to put in. Faucet will be here tomorrow.
We feel like we’re camping. Nothing feels clean no matter how hard I try.
It was cathartic to write this😜
How long did it take you from start to finish?

You did a lovely job on your kitchen.

Just be careful if your cabinets have a lot of grain in the wood, such as an oak cabinet, because the wood grain will show through and it will look really poor. Those need to be treated differently to get a good look (that should have been mentioned in this video since a lot of people have them). Painting grained cabinets is probably twice as much work because of all of the filling and sanding. FYI.
