Is it really already August?? Anyone else feel that way? I feel like this summer totally got away from me! Well, I think I feel that way every summer because it just goes by so fast! It’s officially back to school month for us, well technically it starts the end of the month, but I know some people who go back to school next week!

Speaking of school, we homeschool and this room will function as our homeschool room when school is in session and will be a lounge space when it’s not. I’ll be sharing how this room will be used as a homeschool room soon, so stay tuned for that! You can subscribe down below to stay connected!
For today, FINALLY, here is the final reveal of the whole space, though it is a fairly small space, we are using every inch of this space and getting the most we can out of it!
If you want to know all about our built-in office nook we created from a closet, you can find all the details here.

There’s no better way to welcome you in, than right here with our new barn door! We opened up this wall and decided it was the perfect opportunity to add one! We partnered with Stikwood to DIY this modern, natural finished door design, that actually doubles as art! A very large and one of a kind piece of art! We stuck with a herringbone pattern because we have this pattern in other parts of the home (one is floor tile and the other is wallpaper) and thought it would be cool to continue that design with the doors.
We chose Stikwood to DIY our barn doors because we loved the idea of a peel and stick planked wood, making it so easy to cut and apply when building our doors. I also loved that they come already stained and are thin enough, making it much lighter than if we were to use regular wood. The stain we went with is Minimalist Fir. I love the muted tone of the stain on it, it’s so pretty! Having worked with this product, I can totally see it being a great solution for many DIY products for even a beginner! They are so user-friendly! We used this hardware barn door kit because it was just under $100 and was large enough for this beast of a barn door!
Though this is the main way we come in, we did decide to keep the original door because it’s more convenient and easy access to the bathroom which is right across this door. We added this knob from Grandeur Hardware throughout our home. They gives our basic doors some character!
Moving on to our couch! This couch, believe it or not is the Ikea Karlstad! We gave this couch a makeover with our favorite custom Ikea cover company: Bemz. This fabric is called Rosendal Pure Washed Linen Unbleached in the Loose Fit Urban fit. I love this fabric because it feels so soft and luxurious yet feels durable and still casual. We are not fancy people but we do appreciate the great quality of the fabric and design! The couch has totally been transformed to awesomeness!
Hello amazing tv wall and storage for all our video games, homeschool stuff, crafts and office necessities! This truly holds all the things and I love how clean and minimal it is! I’ve shared this on my stories on Instagram, and every one is always shocked when I tell them it’s Ikea! It is from the besta system and you can modify it to fit your space! If you don’t know by now, I love Ikea! Oh and the whole bottom row we already owned. We just switched out the old doors for these and bought the whole set you see on top of the tv. The cabinet keeps this office clean and mama sane! If you want more details and exact pieces I used to build this piece, let me know and I’ll share all about them!
I’ve already mentioned our wall paper on this post, but we are loving this herringbone wallpaper from Milton and King! It was the perfect addition to this space and gives it the perfect pop of pattern! So I know what your thinking, is it ok that we went with a herringbone lay for our barn doors and on our wallpaper. Yes it absolutely is! It works because the scale of both are different so there’s contrast there.
Then there’s the ottomans, side table and white dip-dyed stool! The ottomans were moved here from our living room because they are so multifunctional, not just to rest our feet but our coffee and even little bottoms when the kids all come in here to play video games. I personally adore these because they don’t just look good but the fabric withstands a lot of dirt and easy to clean! That cute stool floats all around the house cause it’s so dang cute!
Let’s talk about the wall art. This letter board from Madera Modern is rocking my letter board world right now! This is solid wood and this one is 11X14. It is such beautiful quality and so unique! If you’re looking for a not your basic letter board, this is it!! Also my husband loves The Office, so I put up a Michael Scott quote.
The large VW van print is from CC and Mike and it really gives that california cool vibe with a vintage flare I was after. I wanted to add some warm tones in here, and it was the perfect print for this space! I own 3 other prints from her; clearly I’m a fan of CC’s work!
And this cutie is from Maren Devine Art! She surprised me with this one and I just love it. This is the same artist who created the flower art I have in my kitchen. You can see more of that here.
I love pulling pillows together that tell a story. I wanted these to feel a little vintage, a little cool. I think the stonewash throw and vintage printed pillow gives that vintage flare and really pulls a lot of the same colors as the VW print! The grey shibori print has a cool tone to it which really is a nice contrast and adds a fresh touch. This one is sold out but I love this white and gray shibori pillow and is on sale right now for more than half off! No matter how many changes and pillow mixes I’ve made lately on our couches, that black lumbar pillow and striped pillow which is the same fabric that’s on my ottoman, seriously fits in with everything. Mixing it up with your pillow prints not only adds interest to the space, but also gives it that collected look which I’m a big fan of!

I swapped this large round rug that I took from the entryway for the smaller version. I love both of them and I think they both work well in both spaces. They are so versatile and looks pretty layered also. If it’s out of stock, here’s another amazing option!
On to the open shelves about the tv. These could have been closed with doors, but I thought that would look way too minimal for me and would also look very top-heavy. I love this better and was another opportunity for baskets and some styling! You can shop these accessories and the rest of this post below!
That sums up this post! For such a small space, this room provides us with so much: a place to work, a place to lounge, a place to game, a place to school, and whatever else we need it to work as in the moment! Hope you enjoyed the full reveal and can walk away with something that inspired you today for your home!

August 30, 2018Did you build the barn door base yourself and then apply stikwood over it or did you buy the barn door base somewhere else?
Teri Miller
September 3, 2018I am wondering the same. What did you use as the base to attach the stickwood too. Is it the same on both sides? Irs beautiful.
