Create a functional entryway with minimal space: summer edition

home sweet home

Are we all soaking in all this Summer sun or what?! It’s been very warm here in the Bay Area the last few weeks, so I am not going to even lie to you, we are outside in the mornings and make our way into the ac filled house by lunch time.

Today I wanted to share how I used this little wall as a functional entry space for guests to drop their things, and get their shoes on and off, as well as do a last minute face check all in one spot before they head out the door. I was inspired to make this corner summery by these amazing candles my friend Rachel, owner of Agape Candles, sent for me to try. Her 2 new candles that just released, Tulum and Nomad, both are amazing scents for the summer, but honestly I can burn these throughout the year!

Creating a functional entryway space, even with minimal space, is achievable with just a few items. And just a couple touches help to greet your guests with some summer vibes!

Here are the basic elements I used to create a functional entryway in a small space:

wall hooks

This is key to keeping things off the floor and neat with the sweaters, hats, scarves, etc. I love choosing hooks that have some sort of character or charm.

A mirror

The mirror is so useful for last minute checks before you or your guests head out the door. But design wise, it really is a beautiful focal point and really brings everything together. You can find our mirror here but below are some other round mirrors I love!

a floating shelf

It really is perfect because is takes up no floor space and is so useful for placing our keys, glasses, jewelry, and apparently this corner is great for applying makeup so not gonna lie, it perfectly holds my little makeup bag too, when needed.

bowl/tray

A bowl or tray is perfect to keep things neat and orderly. Our bowl holds our keys and sometimes my earrings when I’m too lazy to walk all the way to the bedroom (it’s really not far at all haha).

a bench, stool or poufs

These are great for more space for people to drop things they don’t want on the floor but can’t necessarily hang, i.e. a clutch, a lap top, etc.. But it’s also great for when people need to get their shoes on. As I get older, I appreciate these things more. Sitting on the floor just to tie my shoes, only to struggle to get back up is not the business. Haha, ok, it’s really not that bad, but you get the point, ain’t nobody got time for that 😉

Here are some elements that are sure to add summer vibes:

a candle

Placing a candle that’s fitting for the season is always a nice added touch. It just feels thoughtful and welcoming. I’ll be burning Tulum and Nomad, right here, all summer long. Below are my current favorite candles!

greenery/florals

Living in California, it’s only right to have some sort of greenery around year round, but especially in summer. I’d love to have some peonies in here but I have to be honest with myself and honestly I’m a flower slayer. I’ll figure it out one day, but until then I prefer to not spend that much on it and I do love my greenery. I kept it pretty simple with a glass vase, it just feels fresh and light. If fresh greeneries isn’t your thing or you like or not an easy thing you can clip outside, below are some beautiful faux stems I think would look just as fab and linked for you!

a cute hat

Never underestimate the power of a straw hat in summer! It is functional, yes! Keeps our skin protected in style but will also keep the home in style as the perfect summer house accessory.
