Well it’s summer time and the last thing we should be thinking about is work work work work work.. Well the truth is, we need a desk space year round over here and opening a wall from the living room into our new office/ lounge (aka the place the kids love to play video games) space was our best idea yet!

I don’t know about you, but for the every day mom who needs an easy access work space, but still needs to be with the kids or at least be near by, it was impossible having our office down the hallway and in its own little space. And that’s how we came to this idea of switching the kids rooms around so we can take over the boys old room which shared a wall with the living room that we were able to ultimately open up. Doing this, we achieved this idea of having an office within easy access of the living spaces. I also feel like I can be at my desk and work and not really miss out on what’s going on in the rest of the house.
We could have used the whole room as an office, but we wanted it to also be a space for kids to hangout so the idea of transforming the closet into an office nook was born. To be honest, I brought the idea to my husband not expecting him to actually want to do it. I mean, we have many other projects still waiting for us to get started on, including a laundry space, 1/2 bath and 2 full bathrooms dying to be renovated. But my husband really liked the idea. In hindsight, we are both really pleased and so glad we did this! The kids love it also!
The Desk
For the desk, we used a melamine board that we picked up at Home Depot and cut it to fit the inside perfectly. Of course we’re not perfect people, so to give it a seamless look, we caulked all the way around. The board is just siting on 2×2’s that we just wrapped around the wall and across for the board to sit flat on top. We made a small opening in the desk top for all the cords to go through to get to the plug underneath. I shared on my IG story highlight here how I use this to keep the plugs neat and out-of-the-way. Because melamine can get banged up over time, I would like to eventually get a glass top to keep it protected.
the walls
For the walls, we used shiplap. They were primed so we just painted them in this white which is my favorite bright white to use specifically for shiplap. To the left and right of the shiplap wall, we added wallpaper called Tile Progress from Milton and King. We have had so many compliments on this wallpaper and I think it’s because it’s clean and simple yet interesting. I also love that it really can fit in with any design style!
Floating shelves
The most asked about part of this project is our floating shelves. These were also a DIY and super easy I might add. We bought 2×12 douglas fir pieces from Home Depot and had them cut to size at the store. I used 2 coats of this wood stain and finished it with this finishing wax. They’re held up by these little brackets that are very subtle but are holding up very well. I spray painted mine with this gold spray paint that I’ve used a lot and love.
the office nook
I love seeing a reveal of a space, gallery style, so here you go! Hope you guys like what we’ve done with this space! I really wanted this space to be fun, functional and flows well with the rest of the home! I think this room fits the bill!

July 31, 2018I love everything about this space!! My husband decided we can no longer share an office, so I am moving up to our guest room and with the extra shiplap from another project I have sitting outside, I am going to use this as inspo!! Thanks for sharing!
