Today I’m joining some of my friends to share a Mother’s Day tablescape hosted by my friend Bre over at Rooms For Rent Blog. And since the kids picked up their toys last night, I figured I’d also share the living room/ dining room layout that we changed up a bit this past weekend while we were at it.
Before we get to the tablescape, I thought I’d share a quick look at the 2 spaces that make up this area of our home. You can scroll to the bottom of this page to get right to the tablescape along with the 3 essentials I stick to when creating a simple brunch tablescape.

The Living Room
Welcome to our living room/ dining room combo. Right when you step inside our home, this is the space you’re greeted with.
Above shows the carpet we ripped up in here because white carpet isn’t easy to keep clean, let alone at the dining table. We laid the same flooring that we added in our guest house and actually laid it throughout the whole downstairs because we really loved it even more after living with them for a while.
Another change we made was moving our sectional from the family room into this space. With all the changes happening on the other side of the house, this sectional fits a lot better in here now. But you know me, no piece of furniture stays put for long!
Of course adding one change created a whole domino effect, and now everything has been moved around.

The Dining Room
This room gets a lot of natural light in the daytime, but at night we need a lot of light to light this space up. And while Jason has gotten really good at adding recess lighting, adding some to these high ceilings just wasn’t in the cards. Not yet anyway. He literally said to me “please don’t ask me to add recess lighting in here”. Haha. So I knew this 2-tiered chandelier by Hudson Valley Lighting would be the perfect choice for the amount of lighting we needed in here and also perfect in size. I usually see these in large entry ways and even sometimes in large family rooms but I think it works pretty perfect in here right above the dining table as well.
Having a living room/dining room combo can be a little challenging coming from a house that had a separate space dedicated for dining, but in living here for 6 months now, I really enjoy how you can be at the dining table eating and still easily connect with people at the couch.

Our simple and pretty Mother's Day Tablescape
And here is what we all came to talk about today! Let’s dive right in to our Mother’s Day brunch tablescape.
You can’t go wrong with a simple and pretty tablescape for Mother’s Day. When it comes to dressing a table for a brunch, I find you can’t go wrong with simple! Don’t believe that lie that simple is boring. Most days are pretty busy and maybe even chaotic at times for us moms, so simple and pretty can actually be refreshing! The cool thing about this simple set up is if you’re wanting a more dressed up table, you can easily add to this! Add a cute runner, table cloth, more florals.. go for it!
These 3 elements are the essentials and my go-to when creating an easy brunch table setting.
1. Keep it casual
I did that here by sticking to a simple color palette: white and wood. Can’t get more simpler than that! I also chose items for the table that weren’t precious; nothing fussy. With kids, it’s nice to not have to worry about keeping things perfect.
2. Add some life
In this case, my “life” would be the tulips. Adding florals or foliage of some kind gives a table life both literally and figuratively. I went with tulips cause I think tulips are great for elevating your table and used a simple glass vase cause they’re my fave for showing off how pretty and dainty tulips are.
3. Add texture
When you have a neutral palette, you can easily add interest by adding some texture. I used my latte bowls and woven placemats to give it the interest it needed. I also used stonewashed linen napkins with a cute fringe to add some charm. I liked the idea of having darker napkins to add some depth.
That’s it! So simple right? These 3 elements are key when getting the table set for a brunch date.

May 2, 2019Very useful tips, thanks for sharing! Love the brunch setup, especially how you used tulips to infuse more life to the tablescape and the way you played with slightly darker napkins to add more depth and texture. The living room/dining room combo is amazing, it makes space more airy and open.
